Using Technology to Inspire Change
Tablet for Kids, a 501(c)(3) public charity, purchases computer tablets and distributes them directly to schools and school administrators in those areas unable to afford them. With our other 501(c)(3) partners, we assist in the training of teachers who may have never had access to tablet computers.
A tablet computer in the hands of a child in a Western country can improve a child’s education. A tablet computer in the hands of a child in a rural village in Africa can change a child’s life — and in some cases save a life. At the very least, it will give children the chance to lead a productive life in the 21st Century, where basic literacy, numeracy, and computer literacy will be essential. Education software can also assist in a child’s education with respect to HIV awareness and sexual health. Our focus will be countries in sub-Sahara Africa most in need, but only in those countries with stable and committed national and local governments.
In many sub-Saharan countries, the cost of a low-end tablet computer is more than the government can afford to expend annually for all of the child’s education, placing a tablet computer out of reach of many children.
Zambia
African Education Program
We supplied the tablets and educational software for the African Education Program's flagship Learning & Leadership Center in Kafue, Zambia. Youth in Kafue attend the Learning & Leadership Center before or after school to supplement the education they receive in the local government schools, which is only 3 or 4 hours a day."
Kenya Connect
We have partnered with Kenya Connect, an NGO with a substantial presence in Kenya. We are in a pilot program with three Kenya Connect primary schools in Machakos County. We provided tablets loaded with education software. Kenya Connect assisted in the training of the teachers and is monitoring the results for every student. Once we are successful with the pilot program we will be expanding to all 62 schools to supply tablets loaded with education software for all students under the Kenya Connect umbrella.
In every place where we provide tablets and software, we will have partners on the ground who will assist in the training of the teachers and monitor each child's progress.
